ABOUT

Artist Karen Morgan hiking in Scotland on Ben Nevis looking over towards Carn Mor Dearg

Karen Morgan is a Lake District-based textural artist whose work is inspired by the glorious colours and and seasons of the natural landscape that surround her. She also draws inspiration from the Optical Art movement; exploring visual perception and creating the impression of volume and movement. Her works include textural hangings and mixed media panels.

Textural Hangings

"Creating shifting visuals and  subtle changes to the perception of a static form through volume, light, shadow, colour really excites me. I love exploring the tactile nature of art, creating surface patterns and different textures, stimulating the desire to physically touch the patterns, not just 'see' them.

For an extra dramatic effect my contemporary statement pieces and traditional macrame wall hangings can be placed against a wall or suspended in space."

Combining traditional patterns of knotting used in macrame with hand weaving, Karen builds beautiful structures, some of which are embellished with embroidery and metallic threads, satin, chiffon, silk and velvet ribbons, beading, jewels and rhinestones as well as luxurious wools. Each piece is sumptuous and unique and depending on the piece and complexity, it may take one day to several weeks through to completion.

Sculpted Mixed Media Panels

Karen's stunning painted wood panels are created using air-dried clay which is hand rolled into individual shapes, fixed to a board, then hand painted with a combination of different paint mediums along with liquid gold and silver leaf creating a satisfying 3d effect.

Karen's textural art is available to view and buy online >here and enquiries for >commissions are welcome.
